Description: Athens is known for its lively music scene. There is a long list of musicians and bands that populated Athens with country, rhythm and blues, jazz and rock since the late 1950s. Some of these musicians and bands are still entertaining audiences. They were here before the B-52's and R.E.M. They are Athens Rockin' Roots. A special community event, Athens Rockin' Roots Revisited, will explore Athens special breed of music and the places where the music was played in the '60s and '70s. The event begins at 5 p.m. with a time to meet up with friends and talk to some of the musicians. A full evening of events awaits: a panel discussion, a tribute to musicians who have died from the Voices of Truth Community Choir, a jam session, and a concert by the Dodd Ferrelle Band. Among the musicians on the panel are David Blackmon, founding member of Blueground Undergrass, a veteran of the Normaltown Flyers and Widespread Panic; Brian Burke, leader of Normaltown Flyers, a beloved straight-ahead country-pop band; Donny Whitehead of the tremendously popular Jesters band; Kemp Jones, an Athens musician whose band Silent Partner played up and down the East coast in colleges and coffee houses; and moderator John Straw, bass player with the Acme Blues Band and T. Graham Brown. More detailed information about these musicians will be posted on this website soon. The second of three events, Athens Rockin' Roots is designed to help people share their memories with family and friends. It is also a great way for newcomers to Athens to learn about some of their adopted community's history. Everyone is welcome, boomer or not, but get your tickets ahead of time. Times: 5-9 p.m. No admission charge; Tickets are available after Sept. 14 at Lyndon House Arts Center and the Athens Library
