Grogus formed in 1995 as a side-project of award-winning jazz quartet Squat. Squat co-founder and bassist Carl Lindberg started the group as a vehicle for experimenting with a larger band with horns and percussion. Originally the group played Latin and funk versions of jazz standards with saxaphones and extended percussion line-ups. Over time Grogus learned Latin Jazz music from Tito Puente albums and then delved deeply in the Afro-Cuban masterpieces of Isreal "Cachao" Lopez, whose music and style still make up a huge part of the Grogus sound today. With the addition of trombone/piano-man Kevin Hyde and Venezuelan-born multi-intrumentalist/singer Tino Garrido, Grogus moved into playing more traditional Cuban and Caribbean styles. iMOYUBA! percussion ensemble leader Manito Wendel also fortified the group's traditional folkloric drumming foundation.
