Krista Terry, an assistant professor in instructional technology at Appalachian State University, will lead this workshop designed to help faculty facilitate community and promote collaboration when teaching online courses.Designing online courses that facilitate community while engaging individual learners with appropriate content related activities can be challenging. However, with the availability of current technologies, there are many tools available to engage students in developing community and, by doing so, engaging in productive collaborative and problem-based learning types of experiences. Communication, collaboration and content development tools that are openly accessible provide opportunities to facilitate group work, collaborative project development activities and other types of community-building experiences. This session will provide participants with opportunities to discuss strategies for developing community and promoting collaboration in online courses.
