Cody Dent had a frustrating senior season for the Gators, but will get a chance to continue his baseball career as a professional.
Dent, from Park Vista High School, was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 22nd round with the 676th overall pick.
Last season, he started 48 of UF’s 59 games and batted .169 with a home run and 13 RBI. He mainly played shortstop, though he also appeared at other infield positions and in the outfield.
Dent is the son of former MLB standout Bucky Dent, who was an all-star with the Yankees and Chicago White Sox.
In total, four UF baseball players were selected this year. SP Jonathon Crawford, from Okeechobee HS, went 20th overall to the Detroit Tigers. The Arizona Diamondbacks took P Daniel Gibson in the seventh round (210th), and the New York Mets chose P Johnny Magliozzi in the 17th round (506th).
Crawford (junior), Gibson (junior) and Magliozzi (sophomore) have the option to return to UF if they do not reach an agreement with the team that drafted them by the July 12 deadline.
