There have been 10 games in ACC football history in which the teams combined for more than 100 points. The most recent, of course, was the game this past Saturday at Wallace Wade Stadium in which Pittsburgh survived 58-55 against Duke.
This occurred just three games after the Blue Devils beat N.C. Central 45-0, the program’s seventh shutout of the past half-century. When the Devils followed with a 28-14 win over Memphis, another overmatched opponent, odes were quickly written to celebrate a Duke defensive renaissance.
But a combined 96 points yielded in the ensuing pair of league games against Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh indicated the rebirth was less than complete.
The 113-point defensive debacle shared by Duke and Pitt produced more scoring than in all but one contest in ACC history. The old mark involving the Blue Devils was 103 points in a 55-48 win over Virginia in 2010 – a total tied for sixth-most in the league’s 61 years of play.
Interestingly, seven of the 10 most point-prolific ACC games have occurred over the past three-plus seasons.
The topper was Georgia Tech’s 68-50 win over North Carolina last November. The 118 point output at Chapel Hill yielded nearly two points per minute, which would be a handsome pace for one team in a basketball game.
Duke is now 1-2 in outings in which the teams combined to break the 100-point barrier. Clemson has been involved in four 100-point contests, winning three. The Tiger loss was a nationally-televised humiliation in the 2011 Orange Bowl.
As for the previous combined scoring high in a game involving Pitt, that was 111 points in a 63-48 Panther loss to West Virginia in 1965.
