Jordan Ellis is in Charlottesville for the first time this weekend, and the school certainly had an immediate impact on him. Ellis committed to the Cavalier staff today, choosing the Hoos over offers from Western Kentucky and Miami (Ohio). The Suwanee, Georgia native is rated a 2-star prospect by Rivals, and is Virginia's 7th commitment for the 2014 class.
At 5'10", 216 lbs., Ellis has a nice combination of size and speed. While he does not have elite, 4.3-4.4 40 range speed, Ellis' film shows a back that can separate himself once he hits the second level. For comparison's sake, Ellis's speed is in about the same as UVa's starting running back, Kevin Parks. When Ellis isn't breaking away from defenders and racing for touchdowns, he is punishing the front seven, picking up yards after contact. Playing in a talented region, Ellis shows that he can hang with the big boys, and deliver a blow when he has to. He has a nice ability to fight through contact, keep his balance, and keep moving forward.
With UVa taking about 15 or 16 players in the 2014 class, the staff obviously loved Jordan Ellis. Even though his offer list isn't very long, the staff saw something they liked, and Ellis was a priority target for the Hoos going into this weekend. If Ellis performs well in summer camps and in his senior season, he's likely to add more offers. Virginia did a good job of getting to Ellis early, and sealing the deal soon after. With Clifton Richardson moving on to Liberty, Ellis can fill that void on the roster next season.
The Cavalier coaches are probably hoping for more fireworks this weekend as well. With Mike London's first summer camp on Grounds over the weekend, some new offers may go out, and top targets will be in Charlottesville. 4-star linebacker Melvin Keihn is the most notable, as he will be at the McCue Center this weekend, with friend and Wahoo commit J.J. Jackson in tow, pitching the playing together for the Cavs to the Baltimore native.
