If you do nothing else today, take the time to read this Sports Illustrated article on Boston College's Dick Kelley, Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations. Thamel beautifully captures Kelley's story ... how he devoted his life to the school's athletics department and how the school is now giving back.
"BC has been the passion of his life, an intense love affair that he has for this place and its mission and for the people here," said Chris Cameron, BC's director of media relations and a longtime friend of Kelley's. "And, you know, I guess I think he just tried to give back as much as he'd gotten from this place."
Kelley's story has been told by countless writers and news outlets including the USBWA, Boston Herald, Eagle-Tribune, The Heights, BC Chronicle and BCEagles.com, but perhaps never as eloquently as told by Thamel.
If you'd like to help Dick Kelley in his battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), you can donate through his YouCaring.com website. In addition, the Boston College baseball team will host Virginia Tech on Saturday in the program's second annual ALS Awareness Game. Four different ALS charities will be in attendance - The ALS Association of MA, Prize4life, ALS TDI, and The Angel Fund - and the proceeds from a 50/50 raffle will be split equally among them.
