ATHENS —
Georgia tight end Ty Flournoy-Smith was arrested and charged with reporting a false crime Friday night.
Flournoy-Smith, a rising sophomore who is entering spring practice as the Bulldogs' third-string tight end, was booked into Athens-Clarke County Jail at 10:56 p.m. on Friday and released on $1,000 bond at 12:41 a.m. on Saturday, according to online jail records. The crime is considered a misdemenaor.
Flournoy-Smith filed a report with the UGA Police Department this week claiming he had his text books stolen, according to UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson. An investigation was launched and it was quickly determined that Flournoy-Smith had cashed in the books himself at an Athens buy-back store. Williamson did not know the value of the books.
"It all happened pretty quick," Williamson said. "Unfortunately books and back-packs are stolen all the time and we know all the places they take them. It became apparent that Ty had returned the books himself."
Police sought a warrant from a magistrate judge on Friday, Flournoy-Smith was contacted by police and told he had a warrant at the jail and needed to turn himself in. Williamson said he informed a UGA athletics "senior administrator," who notified Georgia coach Mark Richt.
Flournoy-Smith sent out a tweet at 2 a.m. from his Twitter account, @SeeMyAmbition80__ that said, "You live, and you learn."
An all-state selection out of Colquitt County High School, Flournoy-Smith played in eight of the Bulldogs' 14 games this past season but did not record a reception.
