Area briefs include UGA meetings, Kemp bill signings

The University of Georgia’s Student Government Association holds the latest in what it calls its Summer Town Hall series today, an on-line event focusing on the August 20 start of a new fall semester at UGA.

We will wait to see which stores in Athens will take advantage of the marketing opportunity: Governor Brian Kemp has signed the bill that will allow stores to deliver beer, wine, and other alcohol to homes in Athens and around the state.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office says Daniels Bridge Road at Magnolia Drive is open to traffic again this morning: the road was closed last night when trees fell at the intersection.

Governor Brian Kemp has signed House Bill 857, the measure that was pitched by environmentalists and property owners in Franklin and Madison counties: the bill bans the burning of creosote-coated railroad ties for power generation. They are making plans for police reform in Gainesville: the Gainesville Police Department will create a new citizen input group and ramp up training in de-escalation.

Atlanta is moving forward with changes to its use of force policies. The Atlanta City Council has passed a resolution that outlines ways to restrict use of force, banning chokeholds and shots fired at moving vehicles.
