GBI identifies subject in Athens officer involved shooting

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified a subject in this week’s office involved shooting in Athens.

Update - 10/9/19 - The subject has been identified as Salvador Salazar, age 28, of North Carolina. He remains in the hospital in serious condition. An arrest warrant has been issued and turned over to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office to be served for one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Athens, GA (October 6, 2019) - On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the GBI Athens Office was requested by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that just before 5:00 p.m., the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a domestic incident at University Gardens Apartments located on Baxter Drive in Athens. When officers arrived, they were confronted by a male subject from North Carolina who was armed with a machete. The subject ignored commands from the officer to drop the machete and attacked one of the officers. The officer fired at the subject, striking him. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for review.
