Thanksgiving makes for changes in local government operations

The Athens-Clarke County government makes schedule changes for the Thanksgiving holiday, with amending operations at Animal Services, Leisure Services, Transit, and elsewhere.

Animal Services

o The Adoption Center will be closed Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27, resuming regular hours on Sat., Nov. 28 for fosters, adoptions, and rescues by appointment and availability .

o Animal Services is offering the Couch Crashers program for weekend fostering of pets from the Adoption Center for the Thanksgiving weekend from Nov. 24/25 - Nov. 30/Dec. 1. For details, visit www.accgov.com/fosterapet.

o Animal Services officers will not be available for non-emergency calls on Thurs., Nov. 26. Non-emergency service calls will resume on Mon., Nov. 30.

o Emergency services – such as an animal bite, a seriously sick or injured animal, or an animal trapped inside a living space of a home - will be provided throughout the holiday by calling 911.

Leisure Services

o All facilities will close on Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27 and reopen on Sat., Nov. 28 under regular hours of operation.

o Parks are closed on Thurs., Nov. 26. They will be open on Fri., Nov. 27 from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM, but buildings will remain closed.

Solid Waste

o Residential and commercial (outside the Downtown district) garbage and recycling collected by the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department will not be collected on Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27. Garbage and recycling will be collected on the following schedule:

o Regular Monday and Tuesday collections were collected on Mon., Nov. 23.

o Regular Wednesday and Thursday collections will be collected on Tue., Nov. 24.

o Regular Friday collections will be collected on Wed., Nov. 25.

o Residential and commercial (inside the Downtown district) garbage and recycling service will be collected as regularly scheduled.

o Leaf & Limb will be suspended Mon., Nov. 23 - Fri., Nov. 27, resuming collection on Mon. Nov. 30 in Area B.

o The landfill will be closed on Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27, resuming regular hours on Sat., Nov. 28.

o The CHaRM will be closed on Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27, resuming regular hours on Tue., Dec. 1.

o Solid Waste offices will be closed Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27, resuming regular hours on Mon., Nov. 30.

o The Materials Recycling Facility will be closed Thurs., Nov. 26, resuming regular hours on Fri., Nov. 27.

Transit

o Athens Transit will be closed on Thurs., Nov. 26.

o Route 12 (Riverbend) and Route 14 (Lumpkin / S Milledge) will be limited to hourly service from Monday, Nov. 23 - Monday, Jan.11.

o Service on Route 23 (Oconee St. Park & Ride) and Route 28 (E. Campus / College Station) have been suspended in response to the coronavirus.

Other Offices

All general departmental administrative offices and facilities (City Hall, Courthouse, Satula Avenue Building, Dougherty Street Governmental Building) will be closed on Thurs., Nov. 26 and Fri., Nov. 27. Regular hours of operation will resume Mon., Nov. 30.
