Traffic delays for downtown Athens

The Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department is working on sewer line replacement on Lumpkin Street: it’s work that will impact traffic on Lumpkin Between Baxter and Broad Streets near the UGA campus and downtown Athens. The work that is scheduled to begin today will be mostly nighttime work and will continue through the summer.

There is also sidewalk work on Baxter that will make for slowdowns in summer travel.

From the University of Georgia master calendar…

Athens-Clarke County Public Utilities Department plans to begin a sewer line replacement project on Lumpkin Street between Baxter and Broad Streets that will impact travel on Lumpkin Street between May 19 and August 1. While all of the details of the project are not available at this time, we wanted to make you aware to expect delays and evening road closures along Lumpkin Street throughout the summer so you can plan accordingly. Should additional information become available we will share that information with you as well.

Current Information Available:

  • Initial construction is planned for the south section of the sewer replacement project, with closure of Lumpkin Street from Baxter Street to Baldwin Street beginning each evening as of the 19th at 6:00 pm and re-opening every morning at 7:00 am.
  • Work will continue each evening, Sunday nights through Wednesday nights each week, with street closures gradually transitioning to northern segments of Lumpkin Street over the course of the summer.
  • Every day from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, the construction activity will cease and traffic flow will resume (two lanes of traffic, one in each direction will be open).
  • The schedule is subject to change.
