Oconee Co Commissioners say no to Publix rezone

Last night’s Oconee County Commission vote was 3 to 1, with Commissioner Mark Thomas casting the only vote in favor of the Publix rezone: Commissioners denied a developer’s request to change the zoning of 46 acres at Mars Hill Road and the Oconee Connector, meaning plans for a massive new shopping center off Highway 316 in Oconee County are off the table.

There is another meeting of the Joint Development Authority for Athens-Clarke County and the City of Winterville, a session set for 5:30 this afternoon.

The City Council in Nicholson has given a green light to a plan to use more than 118 thousand special purposes local option sales tax dollars on road improvements in Nicholson.

Lumpkin County Commissioners name two finalists to replace Stan Kelley as County Manager in Dahlonega: either Alan Ours or Alicia Vaughan is expected to be chosen for the Manager’s post later this month. Kelley is retiring in June after 16 years on the job.
