A Virginia woman threw her ticket away, then panicked when she heard the five winning numbers for the Feb. 24 drawing of the Lottery’s Cash 5 with EZ Match promotion, lottery officials said in a news release.

Mary Elliott, of Dillwyn, went through her trash until she found the winning ticket in the Virginia Lottery game, lottery officials said.

“When I saw I’d won, I couldn’t stop shaking to save my life,” Elliott said in a statement.

There was one major complication. Elliott discovered to her dismay that her winning ticket was covered with coffee stains, lottery officials said. The barcode would not scan when she tried to confirm her win.

Elliott matched all five numbers -- 6-13-18-21-25 -- by using “important birthdays” as her picks and beating odds of 1 in 749,398, according to the News & Observer. She bought the ticket at a Food Lion in Dillwyn, a town of fewer than 500 people located about 80 miles west of Richmond.

There is a happy ending, though. Elliott took her ticket to the Virginia Lottery’s Prize Zone West in Henrico to confirm her ticket and receive her prize, WTVR-TV reported.
