No. 1 Georgia remains undefeated, thumps Charleston Southern 56-7

Athens, Ga. --- In a year when there’s been no clear-cut leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, the No. 1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs did their best to elevate defensive tackle Jordan Davis to the spotlight as he scored his first career touchdown...as a running back in the Bulldogs 56-7 romp of Charleston Southern.

Davis played just a limited number of snaps on defense and didn’t record a stat, but his offensive touchdown just might be a highlight that keeps him in the running to be awarded the trophy for the nation’s most outstanding player.

On Georgia’s second possession, the Bulldogs drove to the Buccaneers 2 yard line, and to the roar of the crowd, Davis came in for his first career rushing attempt. He was stopped short of the goal line, but instead of coming out of the game, his name was called once again, and this time he broke thru to give the Bulldogs a lead they would extend throughout the afternoon.

In fact, the Bulldogs scored touchdowns on six of their next seven possessions to lead 49-0 at halftime. This marked the sixth time this year the Bulldogs held their opponent scoreless in the first half. The 49 points also tied a school record for points in a half matching games in 2011 against New Mexico State and 1994 versus Northeast Louisiana.

Georgia improves to 11-0 for the first time since 1982. The Bulldogs also own the nation’s longest active winning streak in FBS play at 15 games.

Charleston Southern closes out the season at 4-6.

The Bulldogs top ranked defense limited the Buccaneers to just 53 yards of total offense. The seven points scored by the Bucs finished right on target for a Georgia D that’s allowing 7.6 points per game.

Quarterback Stetson Bennett led Georgia on five scoring drives before giving way to JT Daniels early in the second quarter. Bennett was 8 of 14 for 105 yards with touchdown passes to running back Kenny McIntosh and tight end Brock Bowers. Daniels finished 7 of 12 for 73 yards and also threw a TD pass to Bowers.

The Bulldogs close out the regular season next week on the road against Georgia Tech. The game kicks off at noon. Georgia will then play again in Atlanta the following Saturday in the SEC Championship game.
