Stegeman Coliseum closes til further notice

The UGA gymnastics team was to have had a match against Arkansas tonight in Stegeman Coliseum. The event will take place instead at the Gas South Arena in Duluth. Stegeman is closed for what the University is calling unexpected maintenance work. Crews will work on the coliseum ceiling after pieces of it fell.

From WSB TV…

Structural issues are causing a cancellation of events in Stegeman Coliseum at The University of Georgia.

According to sources of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, large pieces of concrete are falling from the ceiling inside of the facility.

Due to the issues, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Friday’s gymnastics meet between Georgia and Arkansas has been cancelled. The AJC said the meet has been rescheduled for Sunday and moved to the Gas South Arena in Duluth.

The facility is used not only used for UGA sporting events, but for other UGA events and local high school’s graduation ceremonies.

Stegeman Coliseum is almost 60 years old. The facility was added to the UGA family in March 1964. According to the Georgia Dogs Stegeman Coliseum webpage, the facility underwent multiple renovations between 2010 and 2017.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to UGA for details surrounding the structural issues and they responded with the following statement:

Due to the need to perform repairs that require immediate attention, Stegeman Coliseum will be closed until further notice. The university has begun notifying groups that have reserved the coliseum and advised them to find alternate locations.
